In June 2004, the automobile industry in China saw a slight correction in both production and sales compared to the previous month, but the decline was much less severe than in May. From a production perspective, truck and bus output fell slightly, while car production increased. On the sales side, both trucks and cars experienced a drop compared to May, but passenger car sales rose marginally.
Year-over-year, the industry continued to show strong growth, with production up by 21.49% and sales increasing by 7.25%. In June, total national automobile production reached 419,900 units, while sales totaled 380,100 units, resulting in a production-to-sales ratio of 90.72%.
Looking at specific vehicle types, truck production and sales were 94,200 and 107,100 units respectively, with a sales ratio of 113.69%. Compared to May, truck production dropped by 7.84%, and sales declined by 6.88%, but year-on-year growth remained positive at 5.62% and 8.41% respectively.
Passenger car production and sales for the month stood at 215,600 and 167,300 units, with a sales ratio of 77.60%. Production increased by 2.50% from May, while sales decreased by 5.84%, but still showed a year-on-year growth of 23.71% and 4.83% respectively.
For commercial vehicles, production and sales were 91,010 and 105,700 units, with a sales ratio of 96.88%. Output fell by 2.90% from the previous month, but sales rose by 2.15%, with year-on-year increases of 34.11% and 10.08% respectively.
From January to June 2004, cumulative production and sales reached 2.6771 million and 2.536 million units, with a production-to-sales ratio of 95.39%. Car production and sales were 1.2461 million and 1.1322 million units, showing a 36.37% and 31.59% year-on-year increase. Truck production and sales were 752,400 and 755,600 units, with a sales ratio of 100.43%, and a year-on-year growth of 17.70% and 23.79%. Passenger car production and sales totaled 678,600 and 666,000 units, with a sales ratio of 98.14%, and a year-on-year increase of 22.64% and 13.63%.
Looking at truck sub-models, most showed a decline compared to May, except heavy-duty trucks, which saw an increase in both production and sales. Heavy-duty truck production and sales were 24,600 and 28,800 units, with a sales ratio of 117.07%. Medium-duty trucks had production and sales of 73,000 and 111,000 units, with a sales ratio of 152.05%. Light trucks saw production and sales of 49,700 and 53,300 units, with a sales ratio of 106.64%. Minivans recorded 12,600 and 14,200 units, with a sales ratio of 112.70%.
Cumulative data from January to June showed that heavy-duty trucks had 167,200 and 164,200 units produced and sold, with a sales ratio of 98.21%. Medium-duty trucks had 89,700 and 89,100 units, with a sales ratio of 99.33%. Light trucks totaled 416,200 and 415,530 units, with a sales ratio of 99.78%. Mini-vans reached 79,300 and 86,900 units, with a sales ratio of 109.59%.
In terms of passenger car sub-models, most showed a decline in production compared to May, except large passenger cars, which saw an increase. Large passenger cars had 22,000 units each in production and sales, with a 100% sales ratio. Medium-sized passenger cars had 39,000 and 41,000 units, with a sales ratio of 105.13%. Light buses had 39,700 and 37,500 units, with a sales ratio of 94.46%. Micro-buses had 63,400 and 620,000 units, with a sales ratio of 97.79%.
Cumulative data from January to June showed that large passenger cars had 11,500 and 11,400 units, with a sales ratio of 99.13%. Medium-sized passenger cars had 22,700 and 22,900 units, with a sales ratio of 100.88%. Light passenger cars totaled 244,380 and 239,400 units, with a sales ratio of 98.20%. Mini-buses reached 400,700 and 392,300 units, with a sales ratio of 97.90%.
Key automotive companies (groups) saw mixed results. SAIC Motor led in sales with 61,100 units, followed by FAW with 59,700, Chang'an with 54,300, BAIC with 38,900, and Dongfeng with 33,200. Chang’an saw the highest growth at 34.98%, while others faced declines. The top five companies accounted for 65.04% of total sales, with the three largest groups—FAW, Dongfeng, and SAIC—accounting for 40.52% of the market.
From January to June, SAIC, FAW, Chang’an, BAIC, and Dongfeng sold 439,600, 438,600, 271,700, 260,000, and 252,500 units respectively, with year-on-year growth of 24.09%, 9.85%, 34.21%, 71.45%, and 3.94%. Together, these five companies accounted for 65.10% of total sales, with the top three groups selling 1,113,700 units, or 44.28% of the national total.
