On Monday morning, April 4th, 2016, at around 2:00 AM, Chicago firefighters were called to a laundromat located at 5130 W. Fullerton Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered heavy fire engulfing a one-story commercial building measuring 60 by 100 feet with a bow-string truss roof. The structure had no immediate adjacent buildings, with parking lots on both sides.
Firefighters began by ventilating the roof, then transitioned to a defensive operation. Tower Ladder 14 was positioned on the west side of the building, while Squad 2A was stationed on the east. A second tower ladder, Tower Ladder 23, was also dispatched to the front of the structure to assist in controlling the blaze. Two multi-function ladders and three elevated master streams worked together for over two hours, dousing the fire with a steady stream of water.
As the flames burned, heavy smoke and fire burst out from the front of the building, igniting a car parked along the curb. The utility company was contacted to shut off the gas supply, as the fire was fueled by natural gas near the entrance.
Steve Redick and Larry Shapiro were on scene capturing the event. Here is a brief cellphone video clip from Steve Redick, with more footage to come soon.
