Chicago firefighters responded to a commercial laundromat at 5130 W. Fullerton Avenue just after 2 AM on Monday, April 4, 2016. Upon arrival, they found heavy fire engulfing a one-story, 60 by 100-foot building featuring a bow-string truss roof. The structure had no immediate adjacent buildings, with parking lots on both sides. Firefighters began by ventilating the roof and then transitioned to a defensive strategy. Tower Ladder 14 was positioned to the west, while Squad 2A was stationed to the east. A second tower ladder, Tower Ladder 23, was dispatched to the front of the building to assist in controlling the blaze.
Two multi-purpose water streams and three elevated master streams were used for nearly two hours, drenching the structure with water in an effort to bring the fire under control. As the fire burned intensely, flames burst out through the front of the building, igniting a car parked along the curb. The local utility company was called in to shut off the gas supply, as the fire was being fed by natural gas near the front entrance.
Steve Redick and Larry Shapiro were on the scene, capturing the event from different angles. Steve shared a brief cellphone video clip, with more footage expected to follow. In addition, Larry provided a collection of photos and a video that highlights the intensity of the fire and the efforts of the responding units.
