A citizen contacted the Northbrook Fire Department on Monday night around 10:30 PM, reporting a fire at a vacant two-story building located near the downtown train station. When crews arrived, they found flames inside the structure at 1856 Walters Avenue and escalated the alarm to Code 4, indicating a working fire. Northbrook Engines 10 and 11, Squad 12, Tower 12, Ambulance 10, and Battalion 11 were the first units on scene, with Glenview Truck 14 arriving shortly after. As the situation developed, additional resources were dispatched, including Deerfield Truck 20, Highland Park Squad 34, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Ambulance 52, and Wheeling Engine 42. The main fire was quickly brought under control from the exterior, and crews then conducted a thorough search of the building for any signs of fire extension or trapped occupants. A Box Alarm was issued to bring in change-of-quarters companies, as several units remained on site for an extended period due to the ongoing operation. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were present at the scene and captured several photos documenting the incident. Their images show firefighters actively engaging the blaze, using hoses to attack the flames, and working alongside emergency vehicles. Some shots highlight the nighttime conditions, while others capture the arrival of specialized units like the Deerfield Bannockburn FPD aerial ladder truck and Pierce fire engines. These photos provide a vivid look into the coordinated effort by multiple fire departments to contain and extinguish the fire, ensuring the safety of the surrounding area. The quick response and teamwork demonstrated by the crews played a key role in preventing further damage.
