Zhejiang Institute of Metrology Develops Innovative Aerosol Measurement Technology Recently, the Zhejiang Institute of Metrology has been granted a national invention patent for a "single-dispersion aerosol particle size and concentration measuring device based on light scattering." This innovative technology combines photometric and particle counting methods, leveraging the principle of light scattering to provide fast and accurate measurements of both particle size and concentration in monodisperse aerosols. The device addresses critical challenges in the traceability of aerosol measurement values, making it a valuable tool for environmental monitoring and air quality control.
This breakthrough is particularly significant for PM2.5 monitoring, as it supports the calibration of air quality instruments and enhances the accuracy of environmental data. To establish an effective measurement standard for respirable particulate matter, the Zhejiang Metrology Institute formed a dedicated research team. Through various metrological verification and calibration projects, they have advanced the traceability of PM2.5 measurements, setting reference methods and ensuring reliable data for environmental protection and meteorological applications.
In addition, the institute developed a PM2.5 mass concentration verification device, which plays a crucial role in calibrating automatic PM2.5 monitors. This device provides a benchmark for accurate environmental monitoring and supports the development of local technical specifications for PM2.5 measurement. The project also involved collaboration with the Zhejiang Quality Supervision Bureau to refine verification procedures and improve measurement standards.
After rigorous stability and repeatability testing, the standard device successfully passed expert evaluation in November 2017. This achievement marked a milestone for the Zhejiang Metrology Institute, filling a gap in its particle detection capabilities and establishing a public measurement standard that meets industry needs. With this new technology, the province is better equipped to ensure the precision and reliability of environmental monitoring data, supporting more informed decision-making and policy development.
