The Daily Herald recently published an article exploring potential changes to the qualifications needed to become a firefighter in Schaumburg. The public safety committee has proposed adjusting the maximum starting age for new firefighters and police officers, lowering it from 40 to 35. In addition, the proposal suggests that all new firefighters must now hold a bachelor’s degree—similar to the current requirement for village police officers. This change is being considered to align with state regulations. However, the statute is quite detailed and includes several exceptions, such as for individuals who have served in the military, according to Assistant Village Attorney Rita Elsner. The law also sets a minimum hiring age of 21, which Police Chief James Lamkin believes reflects an expectation of maturity among those entering law enforcement. Currently, Schaumburg requires its police officers to have at least a bachelor’s degree, which helps ensure a broad base of knowledge and experience, Lamkin explained. This standard has made the village somewhat unique in its approach to hiring. Assistant Village Manager Paula Hewson noted that requiring a bachelor’s degree for firefighters may soon be rare, as the village previously accepted either an associate or bachelor’s degree. However, applicants with bachelor’s degrees have already been receiving extra points during the hiring process, which gives them an advantage on the candidate list. According to Hewson, this new requirement might not significantly impact who gets hired, since many candidates already meet the higher educational standard. The changes will only apply when new hiring lists are created, and these lists typically remain valid for two to three years after testing, she added. So far, around 390 people have taken the test for Schaumburg’s police officer hiring list this month, Lamkin said.
