The Daily Herald recently published an article exploring potential changes to the qualifications needed to become a firefighter in Schaumburg. The public safety committee has proposed lowering the maximum starting age for new firefighters and police officers from 40 to 35, while also requiring new firefighters to hold a bachelor’s degree—similar to the current requirement for village police officers.

This adjustment is being made to align with state law, which is quite specific and includes several exceptions, such as for individuals who have served in the military, according to Assistant Village Attorney Rita Elsner. The law also sets a minimum hiring age of 21, a rule that Schaumburg Police Chief James Lamkin believes reflects an expectation of maturity among officers.

Currently, Schaumburg requires police officers to have at least a bachelor’s degree, which gives the department a broader pool of knowledgeable and experienced candidates, Lamkin explained. However, this new rule may not significantly impact the hiring process for firefighters, as applicants with bachelor’s degrees have already been receiving preference points in the selection process.

Assistant Village Manager Paula Hewson noted that Schaumburg might soon be one of the few communities still requiring a bachelor’s degree for new firefighters. Previously, the department accepted either an associate or bachelor’s degree. But with the shift, the focus is now more on higher educational attainment.

Hewson added that the new requirement is unlikely to change the composition of the candidate pool much, since those with bachelor’s degrees are already ranked higher on the hiring list. The law applies when a new hiring list is created, and these lists typically remain valid for two to three years after testing, she said.

According to Lamkin, around 390 people took the recent test for the Schaumburg police officer hiring list. As the community continues to evolve, these changes could shape the future of public safety in the area.

Thanks, Dan
