The light weighting of building materials is a pursuit of designers, and aluminum alloy die-castings are widely used in the construction industry due to their light weight, high strength, and corrosion resistance. One important application of aluminum alloy die-castings is balcony railings. Die-castings include railing bases, railing end caps, railing corner connectors, and so on. Last night, the Buffalo Grove Fire Department responded to emergency calls reporting smoke billowing from a residence close to the intersection of Evergreen Place and White Pine Road. Upon arrival, the initial responding unit observed visible smoke, prompting an upgrade to a full-scale fire response. Additional resources were immediately dispatched from neighboring towns including Long Grove, Arlington Heights, Palatine, Prospect Heights, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods to assist Buffalo Grove’s firefighters.
Attached is a photograph captured by Larry Shapiro, showing smoke escaping through the roof after ventilation work was performed by the firefighting teams. The intense smoke filled the entire house upon entry, necessitating immediate action. The roof and windows were quickly ventilated to allow firefighters to locate and contain the fire within a corner bedroom on the second floor. Thankfully, a cat was discovered inside and promptly treated by Buffalo Grove paramedics. Unfortunately, several birds did not survive.
Another image taken by Shapiro shows firefighters preparing to search the basement following the venting of rear windows, ensuring no one remained inside. A separate photo highlights a Buffalo Grove lieutenant carefully handing over the revived cat to be transported to a veterinary clinic for further care. In the early stages of the operation, Tower 25 from Buffalo Grove was the first piece of equipment on scene, quickly deploying two water lines to combat the flames. It was noted that the primary hydrant in use initially proved nonfunctional, requiring crews to switch to an alternate source to continue their efforts.
Additional images from the incident are available in a small gallery HERE. This collaborative effort between multiple fire departments highlights the critical teamwork required to manage such emergencies effectively. While the outcome resulted in significant property damage, the quick actions of the responders helped mitigate potential risks and save lives.
