**Autodesk’s New Home: Breathing Innovation into Portland's Central Eastside** When it comes to staying ahead in tech innovation, being in the right location is key. It’s not just about proximity to resources but also about immersing yourself in a culture that fosters creativity and collaboration. For Autodesk Portland, this meant making a bold move to join the bustling heart of the Central Eastside Industrial District. The tech giants in the Silicon Forest have historically chosen sprawling suburban campuses or office parks, but our customers—product designers, manufacturers, and the emerging cloud software community—are now gravitating toward urban hubs. Joining these innovators felt like the logical next step for us. The Central Eastside, with its rich industrial heritage, is the perfect place to connect with the makers and creators shaping the future. As we settled into this vibrant area, we knew we needed a space that reflected our commitment to craftsmanship and innovation. Enter the iconic Towne Storage Building, a stunning red-brick structure steeped in Portland’s industrial past. This visible landmark, seen daily by thousands, seemed destined to be the backdrop for Autodesk’s next chapter. To transform this historic building into our modern workspace, we leveraged our own tools—ReCap, 3ds Max, InfraWorks, BIM 360, Revit, and Revit Live—to craft a virtual prototype. This digital blueprint guided the renovation process, helping us anticipate and address potential construction challenges. It also deepened our empathy for architects and builders, ensuring we stayed true to their needs while bringing our vision to life. While the exterior of the building underwent a facelift, we focused equally on creating an inviting interior. Our goal? A space that not only functioned well but also inspired creativity and collaboration. To achieve this, we involved our employees in the design process—a challenge given we had 200 voices to consider! Using human-centered design principles, we gathered feedback on everything from color palettes to spatial layouts. Employees expressed a desire for a workplace that honored both Autodesk’s culture and Portland’s unique identity. So, we embraced local artisans and materials, such as reclaimed Douglas fir from Centennial Mills across the Willamette River. A retired couple even crafted picnic tables from salvaged wood, turning them into a beloved feature of our new space. Even the interior design reflects the essence of our customers’ work. Take the main staircase—it’s modeled after a rough-machined metal part, paying homage to the manufacturing roots of our industry. But the story doesn’t end there. One entire floor is dedicated to the PIE Shop, a residency program run in partnership with Uncorked Studios and Portland Incubator Experiment. Startups here gain access to our employees, tools, and technology, fostering a collaborative environment where ideas flourish. This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to imagine, design, and make a better world. We’ve also committed to hosting the Innovation Quadrant in Portland. This dynamic group brings together innovators, educators, and creators who share our passion for improving lives through design. Together, we’re building something truly transformative. Standing here today, I’m struck by how deeply connected our mission feels to the industrial legacy of our new neighborhood. It’s inspiring to think about the possibilities ahead, knowing we’re part of something bigger than ourselves. Every day, I feel energized by the potential of what we can achieve together. Here’s to the next chapter of Autodesk in Portland!
