**Compressor Oil – What Color Should It Be?** Published by Filter Element Store on Oct 04, 2023 Have you ever wondered, “What color should my compressor oil be?” When new, compressor oil typically has a light yellow to amber hue. It might seem like a simple question, but monitoring the color of your compressor oil is an essential part of maintenance. Operators should know what the oil looks like when it's fresh and regularly check its condition as part of their maintenance routine. Recently, we shipped a batch of PAG 46 compressor oil to a customer who was confused about the color. This oil is a popular replacement for Ultra Coolant and other brands, and it’s one of our best-selling products. As shown in the image provided, our PAG 46 oil has a clear, yellowish-amber tint — which is completely normal. However, the customer was concerned because the oil they received from their distributor looked very different. Their compressor had recently been serviced, and the oil they tested was completely black. We asked for more details, and they responded with the following: > "They had a service guy come out Friday, and he confirmed that the oil should be light in color. I got a picture of the OEM coolant they put in. He grabbed the old used oil. He should have known better. See the picture of the old oil he put in." The image showed heavily contaminated and used-up oil being reused, which could lead to serious problems. Reusing old oil can damage your compressor and reduce its efficiency. It's crucial to monitor your oil regularly and follow a preventive maintenance schedule. If the oil becomes significantly darker than when it was new or has a burnt smell, it’s time to change it. Milky or cloudy oil may indicate water or coolant contamination in the system. You can save money by using high-quality compressor oil like our Made in USA product and avoid the risk of service technicians reusing old oil. Always ensure that the oil you use is clean and meets the specifications required by your equipment. We sell top-quality aftermarket compressor oil and are not affiliated with any original equipment manufacturers or trademarks.
