**Compressor Oil – What Color Should It Be?** Published by Filter Element Store on Oct 04, 2023 Have you ever wondered, "What color should my compressor oil be?" If so, you're not alone. When new, compressor oil typically has a light yellow to amber hue and is clear. While it may seem like a simple question, monitoring the color of your compressor oil is essential for maintaining the performance and longevity of your equipment. Recently, we received a call from a customer who was confused about the color of our PAG 46 compressor oil. This product is a popular replacement for Ultra Coolant and other leading brands, and it’s one of our most trusted grades. As shown in the image provided, our PAG 46 oil has a clean, yellowish-amber tint. However, the customer had a different experience. They mentioned that the oil they were using in their compressor was completely black. Upon further investigation, we learned that their compressor distributor had recently changed the oil, but the sample they tested was heavily contaminated. The technician had used old, used oil instead of fresh lubricant, which could have led to serious damage. We reached out and received this response: *"They had a service guy come out Friday and confirmed the coolant should be light. I got a picture of the OEM coolant they put in there. He did grab the old used coolant. He should have known better. See the picture of the old oil he put in."* The image showed very dark, used oil that clearly wasn’t suitable for use. Reusing old oil can lead to clogged filters, increased wear, and even system failure. That's why it's crucial to monitor your compressor oil regularly and follow a proper maintenance schedule. If your oil looks much darker than when it was new, or if it has a burnt smell, it's time to change it. Milky or cloudy oil may indicate water or coolant contamination, which can also cause serious problems. To avoid these issues and save money, consider using high-quality aftermarket compressor oil like our Made in USA brand. You can easily pour it yourself and avoid situations where technicians might reuse old oil. At Filter Element Store, we offer top-quality compressor oil and are not affiliated with any original equipment manufacturers or trademarks.
