I was driving through Harvey the other night when I came across a scene that really caught my attention. There was a vacant house on fire at 15319 South Loomis Street, and it was quite a sight. The flames were intense, lighting up the entire area despite the late hour. I couldn’t help but pull over to take some photos. The first image I captured shows the house almost completely engulfed in thick plumes of smoke. It’s hard to believe how quickly a fire can spread, especially in an empty building like this one. In the second photo, you can see the fire starting to take hold of the structure, with flames licking at the walls. The third image provides a wider view, showcasing just how massive the blaze had become. You can feel the heat radiating from the flames even in the photograph. In the fourth shot, the fire has intensified, and the structure is visibly deteriorating under the pressure of the inferno. The last photo captures the aftermath of the chaos, where the once-standing house now lies in ruins. These images were taken by me, Brad Bartley, on March 17, 2015. Seeing something like this happen in such a quiet neighborhood was both shocking and saddening. It’s a stark reminder of how unpredictable and destructive fires can be, even in places that seem safe and secure.
