Yesterday afternoon, I had the chance to witness an emergency dive operation near the intersection of North and Thatcher Streets. A car had somehow gone off the guardrail and ended up in the middle of the Des Plaines River. Since the local fire departments didn’t have their own dive teams, they called in Chicago’s Squad 7 divers from O’Hare. It was fascinating to see how they positioned the access ladder and deployed the divers into the water. Unfortunately, the thick tree branches made it difficult for me to get a clear view, but I could still make out the general setup. One thing that caught my attention was the presence of some unusual vehicles on the scene. For instance, Squad 7 brought along an older engine that seemed to be serving as a backup or support unit. The boat they used appeared to have been provided by the North Riverside Fire Department, and it was launched upstream from where I was standing. After a thorough search, they didn’t find anyone in the water, and as of now, they’ve sent out another dive team to continue the search further downstream. I’m guessing the driver of the vehicle might have gone missing, which would explain the extensive effort being put into the rescue. I managed to snap a few photos from where I stood. In one picture, you can see the car partially submerged in the river, looking almost like it belongs there now. Another shot shows a fire truck from River Forest parked nearby, ready to assist if needed. There are also images of the divers in action, equipped with all the necessary gear, working hard to locate whoever might be in the water. One particularly striking image captures the teamwork between different departments, with firefighters coordinating efforts to ensure everything runs smoothly. Another photo highlights an E-ONE fire truck on standby, while another focuses on a specialized dive truck from the Northbrook Fire Department. These visuals really emphasize the level of preparation and coordination involved in such operations. As someone who doesn’t often get to witness these kinds of scenes firsthand, it was both educational and humbling to see how quickly professionals can spring into action when lives are on the line. Overall, this experience reminded me just how crucial teamwork is during emergencies like this. From the initial response to the ongoing search, every detail matters, and it’s clear that everyone involved is committed to doing whatever it takes to resolve the situation safely.
