At 05:49, Prospect Heights Squad 9 was dispatched to a vehicle fire at the Motel 6 located on Milwaukee Avenue. As they were en route, the incident was upgraded to an accident with entrapment. Additional units were sent, including Battalion 9, Ambulance 9, Chief 900, Wheeling Ambulance 23 and 24, Engine 23, Tower 24, and Mount Prospect Truck 14. Multiple reports indicated that the car had struck the levee wall and plunged into the Des Plaines River. It was later confirmed that there were individuals in the water, possibly children.
A swift water response was activated, involving Wheeling Battalion 24, Dive Squad 24, Dive 63 and Squad 63 from Des Plaines, as well as a boat from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods. The crash occurred just south of the Motel 6 at the intersection of Milwaukee Avenue and River Road. Upon arrival, crews found an SUV that had crashed through the guardrail and fallen over the concrete levee wall into the river. One occupant was ejected, while others may have been trapped inside the vehicle.
First responders laddered the levee and descended to the car, where they quickly extinguished the fire before beginning a shore-based search. The ejected individual was pronounced dead at the scene. No additional victims were found during the river search.
The Des Plaines River levee is a concrete structure running along the east side of Milwaukee Avenue, stretching from Palatine Road to just north of Euclid/Lake Avenue. It is approximately 12 inches thick and extends several feet below ground level to prevent erosion. Above ground, it varies in height from a few feet up to over ten feet. At the point of impact, the levee was about 5–6 feet high. It appeared that the collision may have shifted the top of the wall by as much as two inches closer to the river.
Photos from the scene show the extent of the damage and the emergency response efforts. The area remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the full cause of the incident. Local residents are urged to remain cautious near the river until further notice.
