On March 28, 1974, there was a major fire at 132 N. State Street, known as the 5-11 alarm. This was one of the more notable fires in the downtown "iron ring" area during those years. Some firefighters were injured during the incident, including Willard Meeker and Dave Lozeau, both of whom are now retired.
