Of interest … Make-A-Wish Foundation and fire department help 7-year-old

Excerpts from whsv.com:

For a 7-year-old boy in Hanover County, Virginia, a dream that was delayed by the pandemic has finally come true. Javi Guzman, full of courage and determination, had been waiting for his Make-A-Wish day with great anticipation. On Monday, he officially became the youngest member of the Hanover County firehouse.

"He's been counting down the days for this moment," said Amy Guzman, Javi’s mom. "Every time a fire truck passes by our house, he rushes outside to watch." Javi’s father, Martin, added, "As a little boy, he always told me he wanted to be a firefighter one day. I told him, 'You have to work hard, and one day it will happen.'"

Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Javi’s wish came true in an unforgettable way. The organization arranged a special ceremony and a day filled with exciting adventures that brought joy and inspiration to everyone involved.

"It was an easy decision for us," said Hanover Fire Chief Jethro Piland. "Javi is a real inspiration to all of us with his bravery and strength."

Javi is no stranger to challenges. He has been battling a type of blood cancer since childhood, but he is now in remission. His journey has made him even more determined to pursue his dream of becoming a firefighter.

There's another reason why firefighters mean so much to Javi. Not long ago, the Guzman family faced a devastating house fire, but the brave firefighters who responded to the scene left a lasting impression on him.

"These are the firefighters who helped when Javi's home caught fire," Chief Piland said. "They were there for him, and now he's part of their team."

During his special day, Javi got to ride in a fire truck, tour the firehouse, face an obstacle course, use a fire hose, and climb up a ladder—just like the real firefighters. Even his classmates joined in the celebration, making it a day to remember.

His mother described Javi as fearless. One of his biggest wishes was to take a helicopter ride, and Make-A-Wish made it possible. It was a magical experience for him and his family.

"When you have people who support you, it gives you the strength to face any challenge," Amy Guzman said, fighting back tears. "This day will stay with him forever."

The Make-A-Wish Foundation continues to rely on volunteers to help children like Javi. If you're interested in making a difference, visit their website to learn more about how you can get involved.
