It's been a while since our last update in the "Color of Fire Trucks" series. This time, we're diving into MABAS Division 11, and we're focusing on just one department—Cicero Fire Department. What makes them unique is that they once operated a fleet of white fire apparatus, which was quite uncommon back then. In the 1970s and 1980s, Cicero Fire Department acquired several units that were painted solid white. Their fleet included a Ford/Grove 100-foot rear-mount aerial ladder, a Ford/Darley top-mount engine, and a special squad unit built on a Ford F chassis. This squad featured a lightweight ladder similar to those used by outdoor sign companies, making it a standout piece of equipment for its time. One of their most notable pieces of equipment was Truck 1, a 1973 Ford C-Series chassis equipped with a Grove 100-foot rear-mount aerial ladder. The body was constructed by American Fire Apparatus, and this truck was a key part of their response capabilities during that era. Another highlight from their collection was Engine 3, delivered in 1981 by the W.S. Darley Company. Built on a Ford C-8000 chassis, this engine had a custom rear canopy cab and a top-mounted control panel. It was equipped with a 1,000-GPM pump and carried 500 gallons of water, making it well-suited for local firefighting needs. These trucks tell a story of innovation and adaptation in the early days of modern fire service.
