It's been a while since our last installment in the *Color of Fire Trucks* series. This time, we're diving into MABAS Division 11, where only one department stands out—Cicero Fire Department. What makes them unique? Well, back in the 1970s and 1980s, they operated several white fire apparatus, which was quite unusual for the time.
Their fleet included a Ford/Grove 100-foot rear-mount aerial ladder, a Ford/Darley top-mount engine, and a special squad unit built on a Ford F chassis. This squad had a lightweight ladder similar to those used by outdoor sign companies, making it versatile for smaller incidents.
One standout piece of equipment was Truck 1, a 1973 Ford C-Series chassis equipped with a Grove rear-mount aerial. The body was constructed by American Fire Apparatus, and it was a real head-turner when it rolled through the streets.
Engine 3, delivered in 1981 by W.S. Darley, was another notable unit. It featured a custom rear canopy cab with a top-mounted control panel, a 1,000-GPM pump, and 500 gallons of water. This engine was a reliable workhorse for the department during its time.
These trucks not only served their purpose but also stood out visually, offering a refreshing contrast to the more common red or yellow units of the era. It’s fascinating to see how fire departments adapted their fleets over the years, and Cicero’s choice of white vehicles is a great example of that evolution.
