Niles Fire Department responded to an apartment fire this morning at 9701 Dee Road. Upon arrival, units found flames extending from a fifth-floor balcony and heavy smoke coming from a side window of a corner unit. The incident was initially classified as a Code 4 working fire before being upgraded to a Box Alarm. As firefighters conducted building searches, multiple occupants were located, prompting an EMS Box Alarm to be called as a precautionary measure. The fire was quickly contained within the unit of origin and the hallway. Several residents who could not evacuate on their own were safely held in place inside their apartments until they could be assisted. Three aerial ladders were deployed around the building, and Niles Engine 2 was seen charging the standpipe system to assist with suppression efforts. Firefighters worked efficiently under challenging conditions, ensuring the safety of all involved. Multiple photos from the scene are available at shapirophotography.net, including images of fire trucks from Niles, Des Plaines, Glenview, Morton Grove, Northfield, Lincolnwood, and other local departments. The photos capture the intensity of the response, including firefighters on the scene, a resident being shielded from the fire, and the aftermath of the blaze that left one unit severely damaged. Some firefighters were seen resting after long hours of work, while others were seen refilling air tanks or helping to rescue a cat from the burning apartment. The coordinated effort highlights the professionalism and dedication of the responding agencies.
