A new unit is preparing to go into service at Niles Station 2. Last week, we shared the details of Engine 2 for Niles, submitted by Karl Klotz. Now, we’re excited to present new photos of Ambulance 2 from Larry Shapiro, along with more updates on the fleet changes. Here’s what’s happening with the ambulance units: - The current Ambulance 2 (a 2008 IHC 4300/2009 Medtec Type I) has been renumbered as Ambulance 3 and will be reassigned. - Ambulance 3 will transition into a reserve unit. - Ambulance 3R is expected to be retired soon. The new Ambulance 2 is a 2013 Medtec Type I mounted on a 2012 IHC 4300 chassis. This was one of the last units built at the Medtec facility in Bradenton, Florida, before it closed. It features modern LED lighting and chevron striping, making it a standout addition to the department. Below are some detailed shots and information about the new ambulance: [Image: New unit for Niles Ambulance 2 is a 2013 Medtec Type I on a 2012 IHC 4300 chassis. A correction from our previous post: Engine 2 includes two 25-gallon foam tanks, labeled A and B. Once it's operational: - The current Truck 2 will become a reserve unit. - Quint 2, a 75′ Pierce Arrow previously used by the North Maine FPD, is reportedly being retired. These updates show that Niles Fire Department is actively upgrading its equipment to better serve the community. Stay tuned for more news as these new units hit the streets.
