This is from Larry Shapiro: A call came in to the Park Ridge Fire Department shortly before 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014, reporting a house fire at 102 S. Chester. As units were en route, they spotted a header and arrived at the intersection of Chester and Garden to find the back porch already engulfed in flames, with a worker suffering from burn injuries. The incident was upgraded to a Code 4 due to the active working fire. Upon arrival, Engine 35 discovered a frozen hydrant at the corner, so firefighters had to hand-jack a hose from Tower 36 to a functioning hydrant half a block south of the scene. Fire companies quickly contained the main fire, but they found limited access to the second floor. The home was unoccupied at the time and appeared to be in the final stages of renovation. The response involved multiple departments, including Park Ridge Engine 35, Tower 36, both Park Ridge ambulances, and Battalion 35. Additional support came from Rosemont and Niles with trucks, Morton Grove with a squad, Norwood Park and North Maine with engines, as well as ambulances from Lincolnwood and Elk Grove Village. I arrived after the fire had been fully extinguished and have several photos from the scene. The situation was challenging due to the frozen hydrant, which forced crews to stretch lines to a secondary water source. Despite the difficulties, the crews worked efficiently and managed to control the blaze before it could spread further. Mutual aid companies on Chester.
