In a recent article published by The Lake-County NewsSun, it was reported that the Antioch Fire Department is actively seeking voter approval for a 25-cent tax levy in November to support its Emergency Medical Services (EMS). This move comes as a response to a looming budget deficit of nearly $800,000 for EMS operations. Village officials are hoping that this initiative will help stabilize the financial footing of their emergency services.
Last month, Antioch Township followed suit by placing the same proposal before unincorporated Antioch residents. If approved, the tax levy could increase annual property taxes by $101.67 for homeowners with homes valued at $140,000 and by $172.50 for those with homes valued at $225,000, according to Village Administrator James Keim. Keim emphasized that implementing a tax levy to address the current shortfall in ambulance service reimbursements is essential for enhancing the overall quality of emergency medical services in Antioch. It's worth noting that until last year, these services were provided by the not-for-profit Antioch Rescue Squad (ARS).
Currently, while the Antioch Fire Department serves both the village and township, ambulance services have been managed separately for each area. Starting in May, however, the village and township plan to collaborate more closely, integrating fire and ambulance services under the leadership of Fire Chief John Nixon. According to Nixon, the proposed tax levy, which he views as a critical component of this new partnership, is expected to generate approximately $1.6 million annually for EMS services within the village and township.
Nixon highlighted that ARS was never entirely free throughout its 72-year partnership with the village. Although insurance payments covered some costs, ARS relied heavily on donations and volunteer contributions to cover operational expenses like equipment and staffing. However, Nixon argued that this model is no longer viable today. He noted that Antioch remains one of the few areas in Lake County still dependent on volunteer rescue squads. “Every other community has already embraced tax levies to fund fire and rescue services,†he remarked. “We’re a bit behind in adopting this approach, but it’s necessary to ensure our services remain sustainable without accumulating debt.â€
Village Administrator James Keim echoed similar sentiments, stating that the success of this referendum is crucial for maintaining reliable life-saving services. There’s often a misunderstanding among residents that tax funds haven’t contributed to these services or that ARS offered completely free assistance. In reality, Keim explained, ensuring top-tier EMS requires consistent and predictable funding. Many communities have already adopted tax levies, which provide a stable foundation for funding EMS and prevent these services from competing with general tax revenues for limited resources.
As the community prepares for the upcoming vote, it’s clear that the decision carries significant weight for the future of Antioch’s emergency services. Whether residents recognize the importance of stable funding will play a pivotal role in shaping the town’s ability to deliver effective and efficient EMS moving forward.
Plastic crusher is a mechanical device specially used for crushing waste plastics. It is widely used in the recycling industry to crush waste plastic materials (such as plastic bottles, plastic bags, plastic containers, etc.) into small particles or powders, so as to facilitate recycling or further processing.
Main components:
Feed port: used to feed plastic waste into the machine.
Blade: usually made of high-strength steel, used to cut and crush plastic. The sharpness of the blade directly affects the crushing effect.
Screen: The crushed particles are screened through the screen, and the aperture of the screen determines the size of the final particles.
Motor: Provides power to drive the crusher to operate. The common motor power is selected according to production needs.
Discharge port: The crushed plastic particles are discharged through the discharge port, which is usually connected to the subsequent processing link.
