Many companies grasp the significance of Digital Transformation, yet transitioning an entire production process—and securing the necessary support—remains a massive challenge. One major hurdle is that numerous digital tools are overly complex and isolated, making change unnecessarily cumbersome. At Autodesk, we’re tackling this issue head-on with Fusion 360, our cloud-based 3D modeling, CAD, CAM, CAE, and PCB software platform. At Autodesk University (AU) 2021, we unveiled new enhancements to Fusion 360 and our entire suite of tools for product designers and manufacturers. These updates showcase how customers are leveraging these capabilities to collaborate more effectively and accelerate their product development processes. With these advancements, Autodesk is arming product designers, manufacturers, and innovators with modern tools tailored to meet today's manufacturing challenges and pave the way for a brighter future. One of the most exciting developments is the introduction of two new Fusion 360 extensions: the Product Design Extension and the Simulation Extension. By allowing extensions to be added to Fusion 360, we're ensuring its potential is virtually limitless. The Product Design Extension will offer advanced product design tools, enabling users to automate the creation of intricate features such as lattices and algorithm-driven patterns—features that would otherwise require significant time and effort using traditional 3D modeling techniques. We anticipate releasing these extensions early next year. The Simulation Extension, on the other hand, grants users unrestricted access to existing simulation capabilities under a unified framework. Previously, simulation functionalities were available only on a pay-per-use basis. Now, designers and engineers have the flexibility to choose the option that best suits their needs, empowering them to explore innovative ways to reduce weight, cut material costs, and improve overall product performance. This model of offering core capabilities alongside flexible extensions ensures customers only pay for advanced features when they need them. Consumer electronics design, in particular, stands to gain immensely from this approach, enabling cost-effective innovation. For instance, Logitech, a leading consumer electronics manufacturer, utilized Fusion 360 to develop its latest G435 family of lightweight, feature-rich gaming headsets. During AU, Logitech Principal Designer Setor Wu shared how Fusion 360 transcends being merely a design tool, adding value through rapid prototyping and a centralized data source that facilitates seamless communication across teams. Autodesk aims to integrate seamlessly with existing platforms and workflows, making it easier for users to adopt cloud-based tools while leveraging a shared data platform to cater to today’s diverse workforce. Logitech successfully incorporated Fusion 360 into its existing design and development infrastructure, avoiding the need for a complete overhaul to explore the potential of this cutting-edge toolset. This is just one example of Fusion 360’s evolution into a world-class, cloud-enabled Design and Make platform that supports the entire lifecycle of consumer electronic device creation—from conceptualization to prototyping and manufacturing—all within a cohesive workflow. Building on our existing partnership, Autodesk and Ansys are previewing plans to integrate Ansys' simulation technology into Fusion 360, streamlining PCB design. This initial collaboration will allow users to verify and validate PCB designs using Ansys’ industry-leading validation tools, embedded directly within Fusion 360. It will also enable enhanced rule checks for printed circuit boards, providing real-time insights into electrical performance to ensure compliance with specifications and certification requirements. Additionally, it will help users identify and resolve issues more efficiently, allowing them to design better products with fewer errors. This integration underscores the adaptability of Fusion 360, built on the Autodesk Forge platform. While we at Autodesk continue to innovate, we recognize that collaboration with industry leaders like Ansys is essential to enhancing our offerings. We’re thrilled to take this first step toward integrating Ansys’ technology into Fusion 360. In addition to these technical advancements, Autodesk is committed to addressing the pressing skills gap in manufacturing. To do so, we’re launching four new career certifications aligned with Fusion 360, completing the curriculum for Machinist and Mechanical Engineering roles. Expanding on last year’s Autodesk Certification Program, these certifications emphasize self-paced learning that prepares professionals for evolving job roles in tomorrow’s interconnected manufacturing landscape. These credentials go beyond simply demonstrating proficiency with modern manufacturing tools; they highlight a holistic mindset and readiness for emerging, cross-functional roles. Together, these enhancements bring us closer to achieving our mission of equipping the leaders, innovators, and designers of tomorrow with the digital tools and knowledge necessary to tackle some of our greatest challenges.
