**Craftsmanship:** Great automation means superior quality assurance. Built-in inspections during the production process are now standard. For example, we use machine probing within CNCs, vision inspection, and weight checks. Parts that fail automatic inspection are flagged for additional quality checks.
**Can-Do Attitude:** Automation is all about turning dreams into reality. If it can be imagined, it can be built. I often tell people, "I can make it do anything you want—it just needs clear instructions."

**Tell us about the new robot.**
The new robot is a Fanuc CRX20iA / L collaborative robot (cobot), affectionately named "Romeo." It can handle weights up to 20 kg (~44 lbs) safely alongside humans.
We chose Fanuc because of its robust payload capabilities. Some of our largest machine blanks weigh almost three-quarters of Romeo’s full capacity.

**What excites you most about the new robot and why was it chosen for this application?**
As an automation engineer, I picked Fanuc Cobots because they’re easy to program, even for non-programmers. With only one Automation Engineer on staff, I needed something user-friendly to train others. This ensures seamless project execution without constant supervision.
Machinists love the "spinny wheels" for precise movements along the X, Y, and Z axes. Since I aim to teach machinists how to program robots, choosing a robot that resonates with them was crucial—Fanuc fit the bill perfectly.
My priority is easing the workload of operators. Using my expertise in automation, I identify opportunities to streamline processes, making life easier for the operators I still deeply connect with.

**How will the new robot impact daily operations at Suburban?**
Once Romeo proves itself on its initial part, it will eliminate the need for a skilled machinist to stand by the CNC machine for loading and unloading. This frees up valuable resources to refine other processes, design new programs, and address the labor shortage crisis.
Unlike human operators, Romeo won’t need breaks or get distracted. It can work continuously throughout the night when no one else is around. This adds over 5 hours of operational time per day while freeing up labor for other tasks.
With its vision system installed, Romeo’s ultimate goal is to move between machines to handle different parts efficiently.

By reducing downtime and increasing in-process quality inspections, customers will enjoy shorter lead times and improved product quality. Lower labor costs and higher throughput could also mean potential savings passed on to customers.

In the face of global labor shortages, automation becomes increasingly vital. With growing backlogs, we plan to gather more data from machines to optimize processes. Robots working round-the-clock reduce the need for human operators, maintaining or even increasing throughput.
