Chicago's 19th Battalion responded to a fire early Sunday morning (June 24) at 7241 South Sangamon Street. The incident began at approximately 5:45 AM, and Engine 54 arrived shortly thereafter as flames engulfed the first floor. I got there just in time to see firefighters dousing lingering hotspots. As crews were setting up ladders at the rear attic windows, an unexpected visitor made its appearance—a mother pitbull accompanied by five playful puppies bolted out of the back door.
Thankfully, these dogs were incredibly calm and showed no signs of distress despite the chaos unfolding around them. It was a heartwarming moment amidst the intensity of the situation.
Here are some photos capturing the aftermath of the fire and the resilient spirit of the neighborhood. These images were taken by yours truly, Eric Haak.

It’s always remarkable to witness both the professionalism of our first responders and the resilience of animals like this mother pitbull and her pups. Their calm demeanor added a unique touch to what could have been a tense morning.
Stay safe out there, everyone!
