Yesterday, I had the chance to witness an accident involving a car that fell off the guardrail near North and Thatcher, ending up in the middle of the Des Plaines River. It was quite a sight. The local fire departments didn’t have their own dive teams, so they called in Chicago Squad 7 divers from O’Hare. As someone who’s always interested in how these things work, I stayed to watch the entire process. It was fascinating to see how they positioned the access ladder and prepared the divers for action. Unfortunately, the tree branches got in the way, making it hard for me to get a clear view, but I still managed to grasp the general idea. There were some unusual vehicles on the scene too—Squad 7 even brought along an old engine as a backup. The boat used for the rescue operation appeared to be from the North Riverside Fire Department, and it was deployed upstream from where I was standing. The initial search didn’t turn up anyone, which was both relieving and concerning. As of now, they’ve sent out another dive box to continue the search further downstream. I’m starting to suspect that the person driving the car might be missing. Attached are some photos I took during the event. They don’t capture everything perfectly, especially with the obstructed views, but they should give you an idea of what happened. You’ll see various fire trucks, including the River Forest Fire Department's rig, and some unique equipment being used by the divers. There are also shots of the E-ONE fire truck and the Northbrook Fire Department’s dive truck, all contributing to the overall effort. Overall, it was a sobering reminder of how quickly accidents can happen and the incredible teamwork required to respond effectively.
