“The market for gasoline direct injection technology is rapidly growing. In 2010, the number of direct-injected gasoline engines in the world will be about 5 million, and it is expected to reach 37 million by 2020. This means that around half of the world's gasoline engines will use direct injection technology. “This is predicted by Kevin Quinlan, Global Vice President of the Delphi Powertrain System Division and Global President of the Gasoline Engine Management Systems Business Unit.

Delphi recently announced that its gasoline direct injection system products will be put into production in Shanghai, and will relocate its gasoline engine business headquarters of the powertrain division to Shanghai. This highlights Delphi's high regard for the Chinese market and its optimistic expectations for the development of gasoline direct injection technology in the Chinese automotive market.

Close to Chinese users

Why did Delphi relocate its gasoline engine business headquarters to Shanghai? "Mainly for close to users." Kunlun Kevin said.

According to reports, Delphi has many years of experience in engine management systems and parts supply, and has established a global network around the world. Through "close to the customer", Delphi has demonstrated outstanding capabilities in all regions and can help customers meet their specific needs.

The Chinese market is very important to Delphi, but it is not easy to shift both the headquarters and the engineering focus to China. Kunlun Kevin said: "China's emission standards are not the same as other countries. Now that the Chinese market is increasingly synchronized with the world, including fuel economy and carbon dioxide regulations, we expect that it will be exactly the same after 2025."

Delphi’s goal is to “develop China and China” and develop technologies and products for customers around the world, including China. The purpose of establishing an engineering technology center in China is to provide better service to customers and to develop and provide durable and reliable products. Currently, Delphi China R&D Center has four products that serve the world. In the future, more and more products will serve the global business through China's technology center.

Kunlun Kevin said: “With the global headquarters of the Gasoline Engine Business Unit relocated to Shanghai, we will implement local production of gasoline direct injection, intake port fuel injection and other technical products. At present, local production of gasoline direct injection systems has already been implemented. High-energy ignition systems, multi-spark ignition systems, etc. have also been completed."

China's direct injection market is huge

Due to its advantages in energy conservation and emission reduction, the large-scale application of gasoline direct injection engines has become a general trend. Automobile companies must adopt direct injection technology to meet emission and fuel consumption standards; consumers will also choose direct injection technology for better fuel economy. In the Chinese market, there are also many models that use gasoline direct injection technology. Kunlun Kevin believes: "The penetration rate of direct injection technology will be higher and higher, and the trend is very clear."

However, the application of gasoline direct injection technology in the Chinese automotive market is still lagging behind some developed countries. Kunlun Kevin believes that there are two main reasons: First, Chinese auto users are more sensitive to prices; Second, China's control of carbon dioxide emissions is more difficult. Compared to traditional engine management systems, the price of a gasoline direct injection system is approximately 1.5 to 2 times higher. "However, as the market's demand for direct injection technology increases, the price gap will become smaller and smaller, and consumers will soon accept it. Therefore, China's direct injection technology market has started to develop slowly. It will increase quickly," he said.

It is reported that Delphi's Shanghai plant's first-phase production capacity of gasoline direct injection products is 1.5 million sets of fuel pumps and 5 million nozzles. As market demand grows, investment will increase in the future and capacity will increase.
