Australian and Chinese scientists are working on a method that will enable smartphones to monitor nitrogen oxides. There are many kinds of nitrogen oxides, and the main pollutants in the atmosphere are nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Studies have shown that long-term inhalation of nitrogen oxides may cause structural changes in the lungs and cause diseases.

Kourosh Kalantar Zadeh, a scientist at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences are working on a test element that can be installed on a smartphone to detect nitrogen oxides in the air. Importantly, the cost of such components is very low. Kourosh Kalantar zadeh believes that this can be used on smart phones as an alarm system to alert users when there is a high level of nitrogen oxides in the air.
